Design Engineering Intern / Apprentice

India3–6 MonthsFull-time during internship

About the Role

Smachinato is a multidisciplinary engineering company delivering intelligent automation, food processing, packaging and material handling solutions for manufacturers across the Food and FMCG industries. We operate from offices in India and Jeddah, serving clients across 12+ countries.

We are looking for a motivated Design Engineering Intern or Apprentice to join our mechanical engineering team. This is a hands-on role — you will work directly on live client projects, not internal exercises. You will be mentored by experienced engineers and exposed to the full project lifecycle from concept through commissioning.

What You Will Do

  • Assist in the design and development of mechanical components and assemblies for industrial automation systems
  • Create detailed 3D models and engineering drawings using SolidWorks and/or AutoCAD
  • Support senior engineers in concept development, design reviews and technical documentation
  • Participate in the fabrication, assembly and testing of prototype machines and equipment
  • Conduct research on materials, manufacturing processes and industry standards
  • Prepare Bills of Materials (BOM) and assist with procurement specifications
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including electrical, automation and software engineers
  • Document design changes and maintain accurate project records

What We Are Looking For

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a Mechanical Engineering, Production Engineering or related degree programme
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks and/or AutoCAD (demonstrated through coursework or personal projects)
  • Strong understanding of engineering drawing standards and GD&T fundamentals
  • Basic knowledge of manufacturing processes: machining, sheet metal, welding and fabrication
  • Analytical mindset with attention to detail and a problem-solving attitude
  • Good communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Eagerness to learn and take initiative in a fast-paced engineering environment

Nice to Have

  • Exposure to food processing, packaging or FMCG manufacturing environments
  • Familiarity with FEA (Finite Element Analysis) tools
  • Knowledge of PLC or industrial automation basics
  • Experience with project management tools or engineering PDM/PLM systems

What You Will Gain

  • Hands-on experience on real industrial projects delivered to clients across India and the Middle East
  • Mentorship from senior engineers with 10+ years of industry experience
  • Exposure to the full project lifecycle — from concept and design through manufacturing and commissioning
  • Understanding of European quality standards applied to industrial equipment
  • A strong portfolio of engineering work to support your career development
  • Potential for a full-time offer based on performance
